Children of the Sun

We asked Julie to answer a few questions about writing poetry
Can you talk about what inspired you to write this poem?
This poem was written in the 70s, it was inspired by the TV programme Roots. You didn't get much about the slave trade on British television and not in a way that put the white people in the wrong.
This poem is not just about black and white, it’s about all forms of slavery. In the days of slavery, in Britain all the people in the cotton mills, and those working in other people’s houses were paid a pittance. I am not saying that they were slaves but they did not have free choice.
